Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT)

A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) enables individuals to turn appreciated assets into reliable income while supporting ministry. These trusts can be established with an Adventist charity or directly with WAF, providing lifetime or term-based income to the donor or others, with the remaining funds benefiting a charitable organization.

Important Information about CRTs

Irrevocable

CRT agreements cannot be undone after they've been fully ratified.

Variable Payment

CRT payments, with the exception of CRATs, will likely vary on an annual basis.

Termination

The final CRT payment is based on the agreement's terms, which may include a lifetime, a set term of years, or a combination of both.

Dear Friends,

For those with appreciated assets, Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs) offer a flexible way to support your favorite ministry while receiving income. With a CRT, donors can make a gift, avoid immediate capital gains tax, and receive payments for life or a set term.

What is a CRT?
A CRT is a legal trust that pays annual income to one or more individuals—either for life or a set number of years. At the end of the term, the remainder goes to ministry. CRTs are especially useful when donating real estate or appreciated securities, offering potential income tax deductions and bypassing upfront capital gains tax.

Key Benefits

  • Asset-Based Funding: Usually funded with appreciated assets like real estate or stocks

  • Flexible Payouts: Income for one or more individuals, for life, a fixed term, or both (if secondary beneficiaries are named)

  • Immediate Deduction: Generally, there is an Immediate charitable deduction based on trust terms

  • Tax-Optimized: No immediate capital gains tax on the sale of donated assets

  • Charitable Remainder: Remaining value supports your chosen ministry

  • Variable Option: Compare with a CGA, which has a fixed payment. CRTs can have variable payments, calculated annually based on the trust value (with the exception of CRATs)
